Planning

Overview
The AAMPO is responsible for conducting comprehensive transportation planning in the Ames, Iowa, metropolitan area. The AAMPO conducts the majority of its transportation planning efforts through the development and maintenance of four core transportation planning documents as well as through other planning documents, activities, and initiatives. These documents and activities are summarized below.

Core Planning Documents
The AAMPO develops and maintains four core transportation planning documents as required by the U.S. Department of Transportation and Iowa Department of Transportation. These documents and their primary function are summarized below.

Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP)
Developed once every five years, the MTP (formally known as a Long-Range Transportation Plan or LRTP) provides a framework for guiding the AAMPO's transportation investments and policy decisions over the next 25 years by identifying a regional vision for the multi-modal transportation system through stakeholder and community input. The MTP includes a prioritized list of multi-modal system improvements that fit within the fiscal constraints of anticipated future AAMPO and federal transportation funds.

Transportation Improvement Program (TIP)
Developed annually, the TIP serves as a four-year implementation program for federally funded and regionally significant transportation projects within the Ames region. The AAMPO TIP is included within the Iowa Department of Transportation's Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP).

Transportation Planning Work Program (TPWP)
Developed annually, the TPWP identifies work to be completed by the AAMPO during the next fiscal year. Work is divided up into major activities and tasks. The TPWP also sets the AAMPO's operating budget for the next fiscal year.

Passenger Transportation Plan (PTP)
Developed once every five years at a minimum, the PTP promotes joint, coordinated passenger transportation planning programs that further the development of the local and regional public transportation systems. Containing transit projects, strategies, and priorities for the upcoming five fiscal years, the PTP serves as a primary resource and input for the transit portions of the MTP and TIP.

Other Planning Documents & Activities
To further the region's transportation planning goals and objectives, the AAMPO conducts additional studies, activities, and maintains other planning documents outside of its required four core planning documents described above. Some of these additional documents and activities are:

Special Transportation Studies
The AAMPO occasionally conducts special transportation studies. The need for such studies is usually identified in the MTP and ultimately they are programmed in the TPWP. Special studies usually occur for specific areas or purposes that require a more detailed analysis than is typically conducted as a part of a higher level, region-wide plan.

ITS Regional Architecture & TSMO
The AAMPO Regional Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Architecture Document serves as a roadmap for ITS systems deployment and integration within the AAMPO region. The next update to this document will include Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) strategies.
